How Student Motivation Affects Grades |
I remember when i was at high school, we where 50 students in the classroom just a handful of the students paid attention to the teacher, the rest where just talking with their friends, playing around with something else or just doing the homework for the next class. Student motivation has been a real challenge for professors and is becoming even harder.
Some studies say that as the student grows up he loses interest in learning and being part of the school and this is also reflected in lower grades from the students. As they grow up the drop out rates in schools increase, so this is a real issue.
There are two kinds of motivation extrinsic motivation which comes from outside factors like rewards and punishments and intrinsic motivation that comes from inside like real interest, curiosity and genuine interest in learning and getting intelligent knowledge
What has been shown is that students with intrinsic motivation are most likely to obtain good grades and be interested in learning more even without any outside motivators like rewards or extra points.
Some people think that professors and the school cant do much to motivate their students to get more engage in school activities and learning more. However, there are some strategies that can be used to encourage more participation and interest from students.
Here are some student motivation tips:
-Give the students more control of options of how to study or how they want learn the course.
-challenge them to participate and earn rewards.
-Encourage discussion on the course, make controversial statements and let them debate.
-Arouse their curiosity giving them a few facts and let them research to solve the mystery
Those are just a few points that will increase the student motivation and thus increase the results in their grades. What we can conclude is that student motivation affects grades, because the more motivated the student is, the more likely that he will learn more, retain more, discuss more, study more and thus get better grades than a student with less motivation.
