Lets Analyze Some Student Motivation Studies |
student motivation studies
Its known that one of the most difficult challenges of any professor and school is to keep their students motivated and engaged in the course and information that they are learning as part of their formation. There are some student motivation studies that have been done and i want to cover a few points.
In some studies made a few years ago it was shown that as students grow up they loss interest in school and learning, especially when they get to high school, they no longer have that strong desire to learn new things and be part of their school, its at that age that it becomes a challenge for teachers to motivate their students.
We know that students at high school are adolescents that have many new distractions, problems and they dont want to stay calm for long periods of time hearing a professor. What happens is that adolescents are influenced more by their social environment and their peers, so if their peers are not interested in school they will likely loss interest.
Adolescent students want to be part of a social environment or group of friends and it creates a lot of influence in their interest. That is why the school has to do a lot of effort in involving students in more creative activities that will make them feel more part of the school.
Motivation studies say that there are 2 types of motivation: intrinsic and extrinsic.
Intrinsic motivation is internal motivation that comes from real interest and curiosity of the student, while extrinsic motivation, is short term motivation with rewards, punishments, points or grades.
And also motivation has to be promoted inside the classroom with the way the teacher teaches and engages students in his course and and outside the classroom from the school by involving students in activities and promoting academic achievement and rewarding them for their efforts.
There are many ways to motivate students, but its important to make a clear plan from the teachers and the school that will make the students interested in being part of the school and learning the ir courses. You need to involve the students in the decision of the school and the class so they can feel comfortable and interested in learning.
