Do You Want Some Student Motivation Ideas?

I was a student not long ago and i remember how difficult it was for the professor to get the attention of the students and motivate them. Sometimes my teachers used scare techniques to motivate or at least force students to pay attention, for example the made surprise quizes in order for students to pay attention or the teacher made threats of removing points from the students or giving bad grades if they dont pay attention.

Those scare techniques worked for a while, but anytime the teacher was distracted or doing something else all the classroom lost attention. So, it really is not an effective way to use scare tactics on students, it might be needed when they are very young, but its not a way to motivate them, if you dont make your class interesting they will not pay attention even if they are in silence and not doing anything wrong.

So lets see some student motivation ideas, what i would suggest is that your students are people with problems like everyone else and they can get easily distracted by other things. What you have to do is create an interest in them on the subject, involve them in the process of teaching, dont just make a long speech of everything they have to learn.

Make them involve in the subject you want to teach before they get to the next class, you can mark a homework for them, but is better to do something fun, tell them to investigate the positive and negative points and then debate them on class.

Give them a challenge and create student groups where they can help each other and make presentation of the given subject. Encourage them to ask questions in class and expose their opinion even if its wrong or they are debating your ideas.

In a nutshell, give them power in the process of teaching, you dont have to do all the teaching, you can divide the classroom in groups and assign a subject for each group to investigate and then let the classroom ask questions.

If the students have access to the internet and computers, you can ask them to investigate a real case study or company and then present what they find out good and bad on that company

On the other hand, when you are teaching your students a subject, its important that you make you points very clear and use power points or presentation and illustration so they can understand better. To get them motivated on what you are teaching you should try to show them how it applies in a real live case study, specially something that is recent in the news or of high interest in the world.
