Crative Student Motivation Strategies

One of the most difficult tasks of a teacher is to motivate and engage his students in the subject he is trying to teach, young students get easily distracted with many things and you have to find creative ways to create active interest in them.

Im sure there are some formal student motivation strategies that you can borrow from the most successful universities, however with the amount of technology and distracting things available to students you have to find different creative ways that are not boring and will make the students really interested in a given subject.

Here are some motivation strategies:

Before the next class, give you students a fun task to do so they can get involved in the subject, for example tell your students to write down the top 3 reasons why they think a certain theory can be wrong, challenge them, tell them that if someone is convincing enough, he will be rewarded.

Once students get on your next class and you start teaching the subject, they would already be involved or know what you are talking about, so you should encourage them to ask questions and debate the subject.

Expand on your theory and tell them what is the real issue and solution, then proceed with the rest of your class but let them know that you will ask questions and the end of the class and the ones that answer correctly will be rewarded.

It really depends on what you are trying to teach, you can find many creative ways to engage them. For example if you are teaching law, you can encourage them to be prepare for the next class so they can make a live trial and they have to answer accurately to solve the case. Give them a case study and then recreate it in class or debate it.

Rewards can be great to motivate your students, however its not always enough to just give them extra points if they answer right, challenge them in groups, to make an investigation and then debate on class showing facts about what they are saying, the wining group can be one step ahead to at the end of the month exemt an exam, lesson or investigation.

Im sure you can come up with more creative ways, but even if you are not sure of what to do, ask them your students, ask them what will make your class more fun and engaging, a lot of them will give you creative and fun ideas that can be very useful. And dont forget that if students have access to technology like computers and internet you can find many other motivation strategies and ways to make them interest in the current subject.
