How Teacher Motivation And Student Achievement Are Related |
Did you know that a study done a few years ago showed that as students grow they are less interested and motivated in school and learning so drop out rates increases? Well, that is true and teachers more than ever need to find creative ways to engage students in their classes.
Teacher motivation is very important so students can be interested in the course and achieve good grades. The reality is that student achievement is correlated to its level of motivation, but how can i conclude this?
We have 2 kinds of motivation intrinsec and extrinsic, the first one means that the motivation of the student comes from the inside and the second one means that the motivation is due to external factors such as rewards and punishment.
A student that have intrinsec motivation, that is highly motivated and have a real interest in improving his knowledge and learning the differnet sides of the suject is more likely to obtain good grades than a student that is not interested in the subject and is not motivated.
Thus we can say that student achievement is related to its intrinsec motivation. However, we know that there are other factors and other type of students, there are students that might not be very intersted in a given subject but have great memory so they can study a little bit and have good greades.
DAnd students with extrinsic motivation, which are motivated by rewards, grades and punishments, will study and most of the time get some average grades or good grades if they really want the reward.
So is very important that the teacher use motivation to increase the interest and engagement of his students so they can obtain good grades and participate in class.
